note

It is something in the human condition. We have been ingesting drugs and intoxicants since the first humans organized themselves into simple societies tens of thousands of years ago. Granted, we in the modern have a very high predilection to alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, cannabis, opiates, etc etc, but the act of ingesting psychoactive chemicals is nothing new to modernity. Some believe intoxicants allow us to see ourselves how we really are, as "reality-enhancers." Others see them as an escape from the same reality. Some societies place high spiritual and cultural value on such activities. Others frown upon them, or they allow some and not others. I see what you're getting at, but this question would be better suited in a sociology or psychology class, not a music message board.
